Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic secured qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Nigeria, following a goalless draw against Libya in Benghazi. This achievement comes despite Nigeria’s surprising home defeat to a determined Rwandan side at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Despite the loss, the Super Eagles topped the group with 11 points from six games, while Benin claimed second place with eight points, edging out Rwanda—who also had eight points—on goal difference. Libya finished at the bottom of the table with five points.
Benin is making a return to Africa’s premier football competition for the first time since 2019. The team will aim to surpass their quarterfinal finish from that edition.
Under the leadership of Gernot Rohr, the team demonstrated determination throughout the qualifiers. The Franco-German tactician in interviews had emphasized the importance of securing a spot in the tournament—a goal he had previously achieved with Nigeria when he assumed their managerial role in 2016.
The qualification has sparked celebrations across Benin, as fans eagerly anticipate their team’s performance on the continental stage.
Meanwhile, Rwanda narrowly missed out on qualification due to a two-goal deficit. The Amavubi will for a long time continue to rue the 1-0 loss they suffered in the hands of Libya at home.
Their last AFCON appearance was in 2004, when they failed to progress beyond the group stage.
