Edo Queens players Emem Essien and Monle Oyono have both been nominated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the Women’s Inter-club Player of the Year award.
Both players were nominated after their outstanding performances for their club over the course of the season.
Emem Peace Essien played a pivotal role in Edo Queen’s excellent year. The versatile forward was key in helping Edo Queens to clinch the Nigerian Women Football League championship as she was recognized by the League Bloggers Awards as the NWFL Player of the season 23/24.
The Nigerian forward also had an excellent tournament in the WAFU B Champions League Qualifiers where she led Edo Queens to dominate every opponent they faced on the way to lifting the trophy. She recorded 6 goals as she scored in all but one game of the tournament.
At the ongoing CAF Women’s Champions League, Emem Essien continued to write her name into the record books. She scored 3 goals as Edo Queens got to the semi-final of the competition before they were eliminated by TP Mazembe in extra time.
The commanding presence of Monle Oyono in goal has earned her widespread acclaim. The Edo Queens goalkeeper kept four clean sheets and conceded only one goal as her team won the WAFU B Champions League Qualifiers in dominant fashion. She also kept two clean sheets in four matches as Edo Queens got to the semifinals of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Other women nominated for the inter-club player of the year include: Sandrine Niyonkuru (Burundi and FC Masar), Merveille Nanguji (DR Congo and TP Mazembe), Lacho Flora Marta (DR Congo and TP Mazembe), Doha El Madani (Morocco and FAR Rabat), Khadija Er-Rmichi (Morocco and FAR Rabat), Sanaa Mssoudy (Morocco and FAR Rabat), Amogelang Motau (South Africa and the University of the Western Cape), and Shadia Nankya (Uganda and FC Masar).
