The three Nigerian women’s national teams, Super Falcons, the Falconets (Women’s U-20), and the Flamingos (Women’s U-17) have all been nominated by CAF for the Women’s National Team of the Year award.
The Super Falcons fell short of Olympic glory as they lost narrowly to Spain, Brazil, and Japan. However, they captured the hearts of many with their fearless spirit and their exciting style of play.
They ended the year with back-to-back victories over Algeria in a friendly series, in preparation for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) taking place in Morocco.
The Falconets were equally as impressive. They represented the country in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia and they captivated fans globally with their energy and resilience. They finished 2nd in the group stage, defeating Korea Republic and Venezuela, before being knocked out by Japan in the Round of 16.
The Flamingos, meanwhile, got to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup courtesy of an impressive group stage outing where they won all 3 games while conceding just 1 goal. They battered New Zealand and Ecuador 4-1 and 4-0 respectively before defeating the Dominican Republic 1-0 courtesy of a late Shakirat Moshood goal.
They eventually crashed out of the competition against The United States of America, however, they were honored with the FIFA Fair Play Award for their exceptional sportsmanship and respect both on and off the field.
Other nations nominated for this award include Cameroon (U-20), Kenya (U-17), Malawi, Morocco, Morocco (U-20), South Africa, and Zambia.
