Bayer Leverkusen will be without striker Victor Boniface in their upcoming Champions League clash against Brest, following a recent car accident.
The Nigerian forward, who was involved in the crash days ago, has stayed behind in Leverkusen as a precautionary measure, though he is reportedly doing well physically.
Head coach Xabi Alonso confirmed the decision while speaking to the press on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s clash.
“It’s a purely precautionary measure. He’s doing well physically but we want to rest him. Following the accident, it’s primarily about Victor Boniface as a person and not as a player. It was a serious matter and a shock for the two of them and us all. They were lucky,” he said.
While Boniface will be absent, U-19 player Francis Onyeka has been included in the squad after recently being awarded the Fritz Walter medal.
Alonso expressed confidence in the youngster, saying, “We have great hopes for him but we obviously need to be patient. He’s come closer to the team with the last training sessions. I’m happy for him that he is able to gain Champions League experience.”
750 Werkself fans are expected to travel to Brittany to support Leverkusen as they aim to secure a crucial victory in the group stage.
