Nigeria’s Flamingos pulled off a thrilling 1-0 win over a determined Dominican Republic side in their final Group A match of the U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Shakirat Moshood delivered a spectacular 89th-minute strike from 24 yards, sealing all three points and ensuring Nigeria’s passage to the quarter-final with three wins, where they will face the USA on Saturday.
The match, played under heavy rain in Santo Domingo, saw Nigeria dominate possession, but they were repeatedly frustrated by the hosts’ solid defense. Captain Renata Mercedes and goalkeeper Rondon stood firm, thwarting Nigeria’s multiple attacks, including 16 corner kicks that the Flamingos failed to convert into goals.
“Playing against a determined home side under difficult conditions made this win even more satisfying,” said Coach Bankole Olowookere. “The girls showed resilience, and Moshood’s strike was the reward for our persistence.”
Olowookere made several changes to the starting lineup, bringing in Rokibat Azeez, Blessing Ifitezue, and Ramotalahi Kareem, but it was the introduction of Peace Effiong and Harmony Chidi in the second half that added extra spark to Nigeria’s attack. However, it took Moshood’s stunning long-range effort to finally break the deadlock.
With this win, the Flamingos top Group A with nine points, three ahead of second-placed Ecuador, who defeated New Zealand 4-0 to secure their spot in the quarterfinals.
Moshood’s late heroics now set up an exciting clash against the USA, a match that promises to be a tough test for the Nigerian side.
