Still searching for their first victory, Benin and Botswana meet in a pivotal Group D fixture.

Benin began their campaign with defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo and arrive under pressure, having now gone 15 matches without a win at AFCON finals. That run underlines the scale of the challenge facing the Squirrels as they look to revive their tournament hopes.

Botswana, meanwhile, were beaten 3–0 by holders Senegal in their opening match, extending an unhappy record at the finals. The Zebras have lost all four of their AFCON matches to date and are still searching for their first point on the continental stage.

The stakes are high for both sides. Botswana will be keen to avoid becoming the second nation after Benin to lose their first five matches at AFCON finals. Benin, for their part, previously endured a run of six consecutive defeats at the tournament, a statistic they will be eager not to revisit.

This encounter also marks new territory, as the two teams meet for the first time in any competition. It will be Botswana’s fifth AFCON match against West African opposition, with all of their previous appearances at the finals coming against teams from that region.

For Benin, this will be their 16th match at the Africa Cup of Nations and the 14th different opponent they have faced. Nigeria remain the only side they have met more than once at the tournament. With history offering little separation, both nations know this meeting represents a rare opportunity to reset their AFCON narrative.
