East African neighbours Uganda and Tanzania will write a fresh chapter in their long-standing rivalry when they meet at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations for the first time at 6:30 pm.

Both sides head into the match seeking their first points of the tournament. Uganda were beaten 3–1 by Tunisia in their opening fixture, while Tanzania pushed Nigeria closely before going down 2–1, leaving little margin for error in a tightly poised group.

Although this is their maiden meeting at the AFCON finals, the Cranes and the Taifa Stars are no strangers to each other. The two teams have faced off 61 times across all competitions, with Uganda holding the historical edge 33 wins to Tanzania’s 12, alongside 16 draws, underlining a rivalry that has spanned more than six decades.

Their most recent clashes came during qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, when both sides claimed narrow 1–0 away victories. Tanzania ultimately finished second in the group ahead of The Cranes to secure qualification for the finals in Côte d’Ivoire, adding extra edge to Friday’s contest.

History at the finals offers mixed omens. Uganda have lost both of their previous AFCON matches against East African opponents, falling to Ethiopia in the group stages in 1968 and 1976. Tanzania, meanwhile, have faced an East African rival just once at the tournament, suffering a 3–2 defeat to Kenya in 2019.

There are also intriguing personal subplots. Uganda midfielders Khalid Aucho and Steven Mukwala ply their trade in Tanzania with Singida Black Stars and Simba SC, respectively.

Aucho works under Tanzania head coach Miguel Gamondi at the club level. Familiarity could play a role, but with pride and progress at stake, this historic first AFCON meeting promises a fiercely contested affair.
