Team Nigeria has unveiled the ceremonial outfits its athletes and officials will wear at the opening ceremony of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

The clothing forms part of the delegation’s preparations for the first Olympic sporting event to be staged on African soil.

Nigeria will be represented by 19 athletes across six sports, according to the National Sports Commission’s previously announced squad breakdown.

The contingent comprises 12 female and seven male athletes competing in athletics, boxing, road cycling, swimming, table tennis and beach volleyball.

Athletics accounts for the largest group, with nine representatives: five female and four male athletes. Swimming has four competitors, split equally between the sexes, while table tennis has one male and one female representative.

Nigeria will also field a female boxer, a female road cyclist and a two-player women’s beach volleyball team.

The ceremonial unveiling follows a 21-day domestic preparation programme in Abuja, scheduled from October 9 to 29.

The NSC said those preparations included medical screening, anti-doping education, technical and tactical work, kit fitting and travel documentation.

Attention now turns to the opening ceremony at the Olympic stadium in Diamniadio on October 31, when participating delegations will be presented.

Table tennis and beach volleyball are also expected to begin for Nigeria on Saturday, according to the commission’s preparation update.

The Games run until November 13, with venues spread across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.

The International Olympic Committee’s current media information lists approximately 2,700 athletes, 153 medal events and 25 competition sports, alongside 10 engagement sports.

For Nigeria’s young representatives, the ceremonial appearance will precede their efforts to turn weeks of preparation into performances against international opposition.
