Nigeria’s tennis sensation, Oluwaseun Ogunsakin, has been crowned champion of the J200 Cairo 2026 Tennis Tournament in Egypt after defeating France’s Matisse Martin 7-5, 6-3 in the boys’ singles final, Bold Sports reports.

The tournament, which ran from October 26 to 30, featured 32 of the world’s brightest young tennis talents, with Nigeria represented in the boys’ category by Ogunsakin and his compatriot, Ikenna Prosper Okonkwo.

Ogunsakin, 17, had to negotiate a closely contested opening set, which he eventually won 7-5, before stepping up his performance in the second to secure a 6-3 victory and claim the title in straight sets.

The Nigerian enjoyed an impressive run to the final, beginning with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over India’s Hruthik Katakam in the opening round. He subsequently defeated Czech Republic’s Matyas Marsik 6-3, 6-2 in the quarter-finals before overcoming Egypt’s Omar Kandil 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 in a thrilling semi-final encounter.

His compatriot, Ikenna Okonkwo, however, bowed out in the quarter-finals following a 5-7, 2-6 defeat to Switzerland’s Thomas Gunzinger. Okonkwo had booked his place in the last eight with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Serbia’s Djordje Sapic in the first round.

Ogunsakin is currently ranked third in Africa and 91st in the global junior rankings, while Okonkwo occupies ninth position in Africa and 154th globally.

The Cairo triumph adds to an impressive year for Ogunsakin, who claimed his second J200 title of 2026, having previously won another J200 tournament in Cairo earlier in the year.

In September, the Nigerian also made history at the US Open by becoming the first Nigerian player since Nduka Odizor at the 1990 Australian Open to win a Grand Slam main-draw singles match across the professional and junior categories.
