Taiwo Awoniyi has called for greater attacking efficiency after Coventry City lost 1-0 to Hull City in the Premier League on Saturday. The defeat came during Coventry’s first home top-flight match in 25 years.
Awoniyi entered the game in strong recent form. He scored and assisted in Coventry’s 4-2 Carabao Cup win over Plymouth Argyle on August 25. His latest Premier League appearance came against Arsenal, where he played 20 minutes.
The Nigeria international started against Hull. He created danger during a lively first half. Awoniyi came close on several occasions.
Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis denied him from close range. He also headed another chance wide.
Coventry controlled much of the possession. However, they could not turn that control into a goal.
Liam Millar then punished them in the 82nd minute. He finished a quick Hull counterattack to secure all three points.
Awoniyi admitted Coventry needed to improve their finishing.
”We did quite good in terms of having the ball but unfortunately they had that great counter attack and they took their chance. It is on us to take our chances as well,” Awoniyi told Coventry media.
The striker also praised Tzolakis for his performance.
”The chances that we had were the ones that the goalkeeper saved. I wanted to put my foot in and that was one of the clear chances that we had, and I think the keeper was brilliant for them. We just have to take our chances as I said earlier.
”We didn’t take it and they took theirs, it was a disappointing defeat for us.”
Awoniyi believes Coventry showed enough quality in possession. However, he wants the team to become more aggressive near the box.
”As a team, we played better, we had the ball more, but at the end the goal counts and we just have to penetrate the ball more into the boxes, and to create chances more.”
The result leaves Coventry without a Premier League win after two matches. Hull, meanwhile, have won both of their opening league games.
Awoniyi and Coventry now face another major test. They travel to Manchester City on September 5.
