Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Musa Gusau is set to address journalists in Abuja on Thursday. The briefing comes amid reports that he and several Executive Committee members have resigned from their positions.
The world press conference is scheduled for 12 noon at the NFF headquarters. The venue is Sunday Dankaro Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. Gusau is expected to address questions surrounding his reported resignation and the future of Nigerian football.
Gusau expected to clarify leadership crisis
Reports of the resignation emerged after weeks of intense pressure on the NFF leadership. The federation has faced growing criticism over national-team results and wider concerns about its administration.
According to Vanguard News, eight of the 13 members of the NFF Executive Committee had allegedly quit their positions.

Gusau could therefore use the meeting to explain his position and respond to the resignation reports. He may also address the status of the current Executive Committee and the federation’s next steps.
NFF election faces fresh uncertainty
The leadership crisis comes shortly before the NFF’s scheduled elective congress. The election is billed for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, where a new board is expected to emerge.
Gusau was elected NFF president at the federation’s elective congress in Benin City, Edo State, in September 2022. His reported resignation could now change the direction of the federation before the scheduled election.
Thursday’s briefing could provide clarity on whether the planned election will proceed as scheduled.
National-team failures increased pressure
The latest crisis follows a difficult period for Nigeria’s national teams. The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, increasing pressure on the federation’s leadership.
The Super Falcons then suffered an even more historic setback. Nigeria lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the 2026 WAFCON quarter-finals, ending their title defence and automatic World Cup qualification hopes.
South Africa later defeated the Falcons 2-1 in the World Cup qualification playoff. Nigeria therefore failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time.
The Falcons had featured at every previous edition since the tournament began in 1991.
The NFF subsequently established a Fact-finding Committee on Nigeria Football Setbacks. The committee was tasked with examining the causes of the national teams’ recent poor performances, particularly the Falcons’ World Cup failure.
Financial scrutiny adds to pressure
The leadership crisis has also coincided with scrutiny of NFF finances. Security agencies are reportedly examining the utilisation of a ₦17 billion Federal Government intervention fund released to the federation in 2024.
The fund was approved to settle outstanding payments owed to Nigeria’s national-team players and officials. Vanguard reported that the DSS was seeking documents showing how the money was used.
The reported resignations have therefore come at a critical moment for Nigerian football.
Gusau’s 12 noon appearance could determine the next chapter of the crisis. It should also clarify his position, the status of the Executive Committee and the future of the September election.
