The former referee’s assessment reflects the Nigerian defender’s growing importance in Trabzonspor’s backline. His performances have helped the Turkish side keep opponents at bay during a productive spell in the league.
Trabzonspor defeated Galatasaray 4-0 on September 19. They followed that result with a 3-0 away victory over Samsunspor before beating Beşiktaş 2-0 on October 19.
Nwaiwu started all three matches. He played the full 90 minutes against Galatasaray and Beşiktaş, according to available match records.
Thomas Reis changes Trabzonspor’s approach
Gezer also highlighted the tactical changes introduced by Reis. He explained that Trabzonspor previously struggled to create clear chances despite enjoying substantial possession.
However, the team now attacks more directly. It also uses vertical passes to exploit spaces behind opposing defences.
The commentator credited this approach, defensive organisation, and individual quality for the club’s recent success. He also praised attacking players Muçi, Dju, and Muhammed Salah for their contributions.
These changes have given Trabzonspor a more effective balance between attacking intent and defensive security.
Nwaiwu combines defensive work with attacking contributions
Nwaiwu’s performances offer Trabzonspor more than defensive stability. His goal against Samsunspor demonstrated his ability to contribute at the other end of the pitch.
The Nigerian defender will now aim to maintain his consistency as the Turkish Super Lig campaign continues.
His recent performances also provide encouragement for Nigeria’s national team. Continued progress at club level could strengthen his case for further involvement with the Super Eagles.
For Trabzonspor, maintaining defensive discipline will remain crucial as they pursue more positive results under Reis.
Gezer’s praise adds further recognition to Nwaiwu’s performances, particularly his work in a defence that has helped the club secure important victories.
