France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after Kylian Mbappé scored twice in a comfortable 3-0 victory over Iraq in a weather-disrupted Group Stage clash in Philadelphia on Monday.

‎The France captain continued his outstanding tournament form with another decisive display. Mbappé now has four goals in the competition and entered the match after helping France defeat Senegal 3-1 in their opening fixture. His latest brace also strengthened his position among the tournament’s leading scorers while underlining his importance to Didier Deschamps’ side.

‎The 27-year-old opened the scoring before severe weather interrupted proceedings at Lincoln Financial Field. Thunderstorms and lightning forced officials to suspend the match during halftime, resulting in a delay of more than two hours.

‎Despite the interruption, France returned after the restart with the same intensity. Ousmane Dembélé created Mbappé’s second goal after capitalising on a defensive mistake from Iraq. The forward calmly converted from close range to extend France’s advantage.

‎Earlier, Mbappé had netted with a powerful left-footed effort from outside the penalty area, beating goalkeeper Ahmed Basil and giving France complete control of the contest.

‎The double took Mbappé to 16 career FIFA World Cup goals, drawing level with Germany legend Miroslav Klose. He also moved ahead of Brazilian icon Ronaldo’s tally of 15 goals and registered his sixth multi-goal match in World Cup history.

‎France added a third goal when Dembélé found the net for his first-ever World Cup goal. The winger had already provided an assist and capped another influential performance with a well-taken finish.

‎Mbappé nearly completed his hat-trick late in the match but failed to convert a breakaway opportunity before being substituted in stoppage time.

‎Iraq found opportunities difficult to create throughout the contest. Their problems increased when striker Aymen Hussein left the field injured in the first half. Ali Al-Hamadi replaced the forward, who scored in Iraq’s opening World Cup match.

‎The defeat leaves Iraq facing a difficult path in only their second FIFA World Cup appearance. France, meanwhile, move to six points from two matches and are guaranteed a place in the Round of 32.

‎Attention now turns to their final group-stage encounter against Norway, a match expected to determine the group winner and potentially influence France’s route through the knockout rounds.
