The Netherlands secured their first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in emphatic fashion, defeating Sweden 5-1 in their Group F clash at Houston Stadium on Saturday.

Netherlands began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Japan, while Sweden made a perfect start to the tournament, beating Tunisia in a 5-1 rout.

However, a first half brace from Brian Brobbey, a second half brace from Cody Gakpo and a late strike from Crysencio Summerville saw Netherlands thrash Sweden with the same scoreline, taking them top of Group F.

Ronald Koeman’s side made a brilliant start to the match and were rewarded with an early lead as Brobbey scored five minutes in after a nice team move. The Sunderland striker’s evening got even better as he made it 2-0 in the 17th minute, finishing off Denzel Dumfries’ dangerous delivery.

Sweden pushed desperately for a goal before halftime to reduce the deficit, however, they were unable to convert their chances as the Dutch held on to their two-goal lead.

Just like they did in the first half, Netherlands made a strong start to the second half as Cody Gakpo scored twice in seven minutes to make it 4-0.

Newcastle winger Anthony Elanga scored in the 59th minute to reduce the deficit, making it 4-1. However, substitute Crysencio Summerville found the net in the 89th minute, sealing a dominant 5-1 victory.
