Nottingham Forest suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Thursday night, crashing out of the UEFA Europa League after a dominant semi-final second-leg display from Unai Emery’s side. The result sealed a 4-1 aggregate victory for Villa after Forest had narrowly won the first leg 1-0 at the City Ground.
Nigeria international Ola Aina missed the decisive encounter through injury picked up in the first leg encounter, with his absence exposing Forest defensively against Villa’s relentless attacking pressure.
Aina has been one of Forest’s most consistent performers this season. The Super Eagles defender featured regularly during the club’s Europa League run and played a key role in the first-leg victory. His pace, defensive awareness, and recovery ability have strengthened Forest throughout the campaign, making his absence a major setback ahead of such an important fixture.
Villa started aggressively and took the lead in the 36th minute through Ollie Watkins. The striker latched onto a clever pass from Emiliano Buendia before calmly firing into the roof of the net.
Buendia doubled the advantage shortly after the break. The midfielder converted from the penalty spot in the 58th minute despite Forest goalkeeper Stefan Ortega getting a hand to the ball.
The home side continued to dominate possession and attacking chances. John McGinn then produced two outstanding finishes within three minutes to complete the rout.

The Aston Villa captain first struck from the edge of the box in the 77th minute after connecting with a precise pass from Watkins. He added another in the 80th minute with a composed finish into the bottom corner after controlling a dangerous through ball.
Forest struggled defensively throughout the match without Aina’s experience and energy on the right flank. Villa repeatedly attacked the wide areas and created space behind Forest’s back line.
Manager pereira had hoped to increase the first-leg deficit, but the team failed to cope with Villa’s intensity and movement. The loss ended Nottingham Forest’s impressive European journey this season.
Despite the elimination, Forest can still reflect positively on their campaign after reaching the semi-finals of a major European competition.
