Chidera Ejuke’s future at Sevilla remains uncertain as the Spanish club weighs a summer transfer for the Nigeria international. Sporting director José Ignacio Navarro has now explained why the winger missed part of the club’s pre-season schedule.
The 28-year-old ended the 2025/26 La Liga campaign with one goal and one assist in 27 appearances. Ejuke also featured for Nigeria in March, coming off the bench during the Super Eagles’ 2-1 friendly win over Iran.
Sevilla explain Ejuke’s pre-season absence
Ejuke did not travel with Sevilla for their pre-season camps in the Netherlands and Germany. His absence raised questions about his position within Luis García’s plans.
However, Navarro has insisted the decision did not signal a breakdown between Ejuke and the club.
”Regarding the first question, about Chidera Ejuke, a squad was called up for the trip to the Netherlands because there were two matches and then one in Germany,” Navarro said at a press conference on Thursday.
”It was understood that, given the ongoing issues, it was best for everyone involved that Chidera Ejuke not participate in that trip.”
The explanation follows earlier reports indicating the Spanish club in July considered Ejuke one of the players available for a transfer. It is also reported that he could continue training with the first team while the club worked on his future.
Transfer interest continues
Sevilla have placed Ejuke’s future under close scrutiny as they look to create room for further squad changes.
Reports in July also linked the winger with interest from clubs outside Spain. Bayer Leverkusen and Anderlecht were among the European clubs mentioned, while teams from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates were also reported to be monitoring him.
Ejuke’s contract runs until June 2027. That gives Sevilla a strong reason to seek a transfer now rather than risk losing control of his future later.
Rayo Vallecano opener now in focus
Sevilla will open their La Liga campaign against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. Ejuke’s limited involvement in pre-season leaves his availability uncertain.
His recent numbers also underline why Sevilla must make a clear decision. Despite recording only one league goal and one assist last season, he remained a regular squad option and made 27 league appearances.
Ejuke has also shown his value for Nigeria. He scored against Gabon during the 2026 World Cup qualification play-offs in November 2025. He later featured at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and appeared as a substitute in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Iran in March 2026.
For now, Sevilla must decide whether Ejuke remains part of the project or completes a move elsewhere. With the new season approaching, his transfer situation could soon reach its conclusion.
