Coventry City have reached an agreement to sign Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest on a permanent transfer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The newly promoted Premier League side are continuing to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026/27 season, with Awoniyi set to become the latest addition to Frank Lampard’s team. The striker is already undergoing his medical as Coventry close in on completing the deal.
Awoniyi’s arrival would see him become the second Nigerian player to join Coventry permanently this summer, following the signing of midfielder Frank Onyeka.
Onyeka completed a permanent move to the club after an impressive loan spell last season, during which he featured in 14 Championship matches and contributed one goal and one assist.

His performances played a key role in Coventry’s promotion-winning campaign, as the club secured the Championship title and ended a 25-year absence from the Premier League.
Onyeka will now have another Nigerian alongside him at the CBS Arena, with Awoniyi expected to bring valuable top-flight experience as Coventry prepare for Premier League football.
The move will bring an end to Awoniyi’s four-year spell at Nottingham Forest. The 29-year-old made 103 appearances for the club, scoring 23 goals and providing five assists.
Before joining Forest, Awoniyi enjoyed spells with Union Berlin, Mainz 05, Royal Excel Mouscron, Gent, NEC Nijmegen and FSV Frankfurt.
Having already gained extensive experience in the Premier League, Awoniyi will hope to play an important role in Coventry’s bid to establish themselves in England’s top flight.
With the move now subject to the completion of his medical and formalities, the Nigerian striker is set to begin a new chapter under Lampard as Coventry look to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
