Raphael Onyedika has described scoring at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a moment he has long been waiting for, after delivering a standout performance in Nigeria’s 3–1 victory over Uganda on Tuesday, Bold Sports reports.
The Super Eagles midfielder was the star of the game, scoring a brace within five minutes to inspire Nigeria to another commanding win and earn the Player of the Match award. The result capped a flawless group-stage campaign for the Super Eagles at the 2025 AFCON, following earlier victories over Tanzania and Tunisia.
Speaking to SportyTV after the match, the 24-year-old expressed his delight at opening his AFCON goal account.
“It feels good. It’s an opportunity that I’ve been waiting for a long time,” Onyedika said. “It feels very good to get the victory and also to score my first goal in AFCON.”

The midfielder was quick to credit his teammates for his individual success, emphasising the collective effort behind Nigeria’s strong showing.
“I feel very good, very happy and proud of the team also. Without them it wouldn’t be possible to score or get this Man of the Match,” he added. “I know how it works in football, when everything goes good, everyone celebrates with you.”
Despite the personal milestone, Onyedika stressed the importance of staying grounded as the tournament progresses: “It’s about enjoying the moment and focusing on the next task,” he said.
With their group stage campaign successfully done, Nigeria will now turn their attention to the knockout stage, with Onyedika hoping to maintain his impressive form when the Super Eagles return to action in their round of 16 fixture on January 5, 2026.
