Victor Osimhen has described captaining Nigeria as a “dream come true” after leading the Super Eagles to a 3–1 victory over Uganda in their final Group C match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Tuesday, Bold Sports reports.

The Galatasaray striker wore the captain’s armband as head coach Eric Chelle rotated his squad, with regular captain Wilfred Ndidi named among several key players rested on the bench. Despite the changes, Nigeria produced a composed display to seal the win against the Cranes of Uganda.

Paul Onuachu opened the scoring in the first half before midfielder Raphael Onyedika netted twice to ensure a comfortable evening for the Super Eagles. Uganda managed a consolation goal, marking the fourth Nigeria have conceded in the campaign, but it did little to take the shine off the result.

Speaking after the match, Osimhen said leading the national team was a moment he had long dreamed of: “It’s a dream come true for me because I grew up watching the Super Eagles,” he said.

Osimhen acknowledged the influence of past Super Eagles leaders, praising the example set by former captains such as John Mikel Obi and William Troost-Ekong

“I’ve seen a lot of great captains, Mikel, Ekong. I see Ekong as a mentor in this kind of role. Ndidi has also learnt a lot from him. For me he’s one of the very best captains we’ve got in a long time.”

Osimhen also expressed satisfaction that his first outing as captain ended in victory.

“To lead the boys out, I’m very happy that now in my tenure to be the captain for today’s game, we didn’t lose and we won the game so I’m really happy about the victory,” he added.

Nigeria’s win over Uganda capped off a perfect group stage campaign with three victories in three games, confirming their place at the top of Group C. It marked just the second time in their AFCON history that they have completed a group stage with a 100 percent record.
