Eric Chelle struck a measured tone after Nigeria’s 3-1 victory over Uganda on Tuesday night, insisting the focus has already shifted to the knockout stages despite his obvious satisfaction with the result boldsports reports.

Nigeria completed the group stage with a perfect record, but Eric Chelle was keen to stress that there is little time for celebration as preparation for the round of 16 begins.

“I cannot be serious with you, I’m very happy about that,” Eric Chelle told reporters with a smile. “But I have to stay calm and focus on the next game. I have to analyse this game and put the players under pressure because they have to do some great training sessions to prepare for what is coming. I just want to stay focused and stay humble.”

One of the standout performances on the night came from debutant Ryan Alebiosu, and Eric Chelle praised the youngster’s display while also revealing concerns over an injury picked up during the match.

“I’m happy with what he did,” the coach said. “But I’m a little bit worried because he has an injury. He sustained a deep cut on his right leg, so he will go to the hospital. I’m pleased with his performance today and, like I said, I have a lot of choices right now.”

With Nigeria now through to the round of 16, Eric Chelle was asked whether more of the new faces in the squad could expect opportunities as the tournament progresses.

“Yeah, I try,” he replied. “But they have to show me if they can play or not in the training sessions. They are free in training, do your job there and I’ll do my job.”

Nigeria will now await confirmation of their last-16 opponents, as Eric Chelle balances confidence in his squad with a clear demand for continued intensity and discipline.
