Nigerian legend Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha has said the current crop of the Super Eagles would stand no chance against the iconic team that won Olympic gold in 1996, insisting it would simply be a question of “how many goals they want to concede.”

Okocha made the remarks in Morocco during a live stream with Nigerian comedian and content creator Shank Comics, after being asked whether today’s Super Eagles could defeat the 1996 Olympic squad that triumphed in Atlanta, United States.

A key member of that historic team, Okocha maintained that the quality and depth of the 1996 side cannot be compared with the present national team, predicting a one-sided contest in favour of the Olympic champions.

“There’s no chance for them at all. It’s just about how many they would collect,” Okocha said.

When asked to consider standout players in the current team, including Victor Osimhen and his nephew Alex Iwobi, the former Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers midfielder insisted the 1996 squad still had superior quality.

“We’re talking about Rashidi Yekini, Sunday Oliseh, Nwankwo Kanu, Daniel Amokachi, Taribo West. I don’t even want to talk about myself,” he added. “These boys are still learners.”

Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic team is widely regarded as one of the greatest national squads in the country’s football history. They became the first African nation to win Olympic gold in football and produced a generation of players who went on to leave a lasting impact on the global game.
