WNBA franchise Dallas Wings have signed D’Tigress forward Amy Okonkwo to a seven-day hardship contract, effective immediately.

The team announced the signing of the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Most Valuable Player on Wednesday. Okonkwo will be available for the Wings’ upcoming games against the Seattle Storm.

“The Dallas Wings have signed forward Amy Okonkwo to a seven-day hardship contract. The two-time FIBA AfroBasket MVP (2023, 2025) will be available for Friday’s game against the Seattle Storm,” the club said in a statement.

A hardship contract in the WNBA is a short-term deal granted when a team falls below the league’s minimum roster requirement, typically 10 players, due to injuries or illnesses.

The Wings turned to Okonkwo following the injury to All-Star guard Arike Ogunbowale, who has been diagnosed with tendinitis in her right knee and will remain sidelined pending further evaluation in the coming weeks.

Okonkwo arrives with an impressive resume as a two-time Olympian and two-time Women’s Afrobasket MVP. During the 2024/25 season, she played for French side Bourges, averaging 14.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 48 percent from beyond the arc.

Earlier this year, she appeared in two preseason games with the Connecticut Sun after signing a training camp contract, averaging 7.0 points and 4.0 rebounds.

Okonkwo will be hoping to help the Wings bounce out of their nine-game losing streak when they face the Storm on Friday.
