Victor Boniface’s struggles for goals with the Super Eagles persisted as Nigeria fell 2-1 to Rwanda in Monday’s AFCON qualification match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
Despite a strong start to his club season, Boniface’s barren run in national colors extended to 11 games without a goal.
In contrast, Boniface has picked up where her left off with Bayer Leverkusen last season, scoring six goals and providing one assist in 10 games for the German side.
With Victor Osimhen rested, coach Augustine Eguavoen handed Boniface the responsibility of leading Nigeria’s attack. Flanked by Moses Simon on the left and Kelechi Iheanacho on the right, Boniface had a few chances but failed to capitalize. His best effort, a powerful second-half header, was acrobatically saved by Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwali. He was substituted for Sadiq Umar in the 89th minute as Nigeria searched for a late equaliser.
There there have been supports from the coach, teammates like Osimhen and others, there are calls in some quarters for the Super Eagles to explore other striking options as the team tries to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
After the match against Rwanda, Eguavoen expressed his continued faith in the striker despite the ongoing goal drought.
“Boniface, we all know what he’s capable of doing, especially for his club,” Eguavoen said.
“When he comes back here, we try to give him a lot of confidence and playing time, but he’s not hitting the back of the net for whatever reason. I’ve spoken to him personally many times. I’m someone who wants to give players confidence. I’ve done enough, but he’s still part of the squad and will remain a part of the squad.”
The pressure is mounting on Boniface as the Super Eagles gear up for their 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
