Osimhen ends four-game goal drought in Napoli’s comeback win over Monza

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen scored for the first time in five games as Napoli came from behind to defeat Monza 4-2 away from home in the Italian Serie A on Sunday.

Napoli faced early adversity when Milan Duric put Monza ahead in the ninth minute with a well-placed volley, a lead they held until halftime.

There were concerns for Napoli as Osimhen limped off just before halftime, raising fears that he might not return for the second half. However, the Nigeria striker was fit enough to rejoin his teammates after the break.

In the 55th minute, Osimhen equalized for Napoli by connecting with André-Frank Zambo Anguissa’s cross and burying a header. Two minutes later, Matteo Politano gave Napoli the lead with a spectacular volley from 25 yards out.

Napoli continued their surge with Piotr Zieliński bending in a 20-yard effort to make it 3-1. Monza responded quickly, pulling one back through Andrea Colpani’s shot in the 58th minute to make it 3-2.

Napoli regained control when substitute Giacomo Raspadori scored just 45 seconds after coming onto the pitch, capitalizing on a rebound from a Giovanni Di Lorenzo shot to extend Napoli’s lead to 4-2 in the 69th minute.

Both sides failed to score further as the match concluded, giving last season’s Serie A winners a much-needed victory and ending their four-match winless streak.

Osimhen also rediscovered his scoring touch after failing to find the net since Napoli’s 6-1 win over Sassuolo on February 28 where he bagged a hattrick.

The Nigerian who was last season’s Serie A goal king now has 12 scores to place joint-fourth on the top scorers log.
