Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has broken his silence on the recent criticism surrounding his slow start to life at Werder Bremen, insisting he remains unfazed despite failing to find the net since joining the Bundesliga club in the summer.
Reports had suggested that Bremen manager Horst Steffen had publicly challenged the Nigerian forward to improve his performances following the team’s 1-1 draw against Mainz. However, Boniface dismissed any knowledge of such comments, maintaining that he is still adapting to his new environment.
“I stopped reading everything online because we don’t know which one is true and which is a lie. I haven’t seen any comments from the coach,” Boniface told reporters.
“I’m new to the club, I’m new to this place, this city, so I’m getting used to this. Sometimes in football you go to a club and you click, sometimes you don’t.”

Boniface, who enjoyed an impressive debut Bundesliga season with Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 14 goals and providing eight assists as they won the league title, has yet to replicate that form at Bremen. The striker noted that while his goal tally is under scrutiny, his overall contribution on the pitch should not be overlooked.
“Now I’m here, people are focusing more on the fact that I haven’t scored, but if you watch the game, you’ll see what I contribute. Against Union Berlin at home, we won, I didn’t score or assist, but if you watch the game, you’ll know what I bring to the team,” he explained.
“When you don’t score, people wanna talk, but trust me you don’t know anything about me. I’ve seen this, but anyone who knows me knows I’m a strong guy, those things don’t really affect me.”
The Nigerian forward endured an injury-plagued second season at Bayer Leverkusen, managing eight goals and one assist in 19 league appearances. Despite that, he was still among the club’s top scorers.

“I’m trying to be better. This is my worst start (to a season) since I’ve been in Germany. I’ve played about five games with no goal. My first season was great, my second season, I missed almost 20 games but I scored eight goals, I was the second highest goalscorer in Leverkusen, and they said it’s a bad season, I’m trying to understand this,” he said.
“Most people don’t watch games, they just check Livescore, they wanna make money from Twitter. If you know the type of guy I am, you’ll know I have no problem. The most important thing is that if I’m happy I’ll give everything.”
Boniface concluded by assuring fans that he is working hard behind the scenes to regain his top form.
“A lot of things happen behind the scenes that you guys don’t know. But I’m trying hard to get to where I was before so we’ll see.”
