Super Eagles players and coaching staff may boycott training and their trip to Marrakech after reports emerged that they are yet to receive bonuses for their first four matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, the squad remain focused on their campaign but will refuse to train or travel to Marrakech on Thursday if the outstanding payments are not settled.
Nigeria have been perfect at the tournament so far, securing maximum nine points in the group stage after victories over Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda. They then thrashed Mozambique in the round of 16, setting up a quarterfinal clash with Algeria.
However, recent reports indicate that both players and backroom staff are still awaiting payment of their win bonuses, a situation that could disrupt preparations ahead of Saturday’s big clash with the Desert Foxes.

“Players and coaching staff of #Nigeria are waiting on #AFCON2025 bonus payments,” Okeleji wrote on his official X account. “Win bonuses from four matches – vs Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda & Mozambique – have yet to be received.”
“Squad remain focused but will NOT train or travel to Marrakech on Thursday if this isn’t resolved,” he added.
This is not the first time the Super Eagles have threatened not to train if they are not paid their bonuses. Ahead of last year’s CAF World Cup playoffs, the players and staff staged a training boycott. Although the dispute was eventually resolved, Nigeria went on to lose to DR Congo in the final, missing out on World Cup qualification for the second consecutive time.
Prior to the AFCON, it was also revealed that head coach Eric Chelle was owed three months salary and bonuses. The Malian is however yet to make an official complaint to his employers.
