Nigeria’s sprint star Samuel Ogazi delivered a historic performance to win the men’s 400 metres at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships, clocking a blistering 44.57 seconds to claim the national title and set a new African indoor record.

Competing for the University of Alabama, Ogazi surged away from the field in the final stretch to secure victory by a tenth of a second ahead of American rival Justin Braun, who took silver with a personal best of 44.67 seconds.

The stunning run places Ogazi among the greatest indoor quarter-milers in history. His 44.57s is tied for third on the NCAA all-time indoor list and joint fourth on the world indoor all-time rankings, underlining the magnitude of his achievement.

The victory also means Ogazi has now captured both the NCAA outdoor and indoor 400m titles, having won the outdoor crown in 2025, further cementing his status as one of the most dominant collegiate sprinters in the United States.

Beyond his individual triumph, Ogazi also helped the Alabama team secure a podium finish in the men’s 4x400m relay. The Crimson Tide quartet produced a strong performance to finish second in 3:03.60, earning silver medals and First Team All-America honours.

Ogazi’s record-breaking run and his team’s relay success capped a memorable outing for the Alabama program and further highlighted the Nigerian sprinter’s growing reputation on the global athletics stage.
