Southampton manager Russell Martin is optimistic that Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu will be fit to face Brighton at the AMEX Stadium on Saturday.
Onuachu made his first start of the season during Southampton’s narrow 3-2 defeat to league leaders Liverpool. The towering striker impressed fans with his exceptional footwork and ball retention skills but was forced off in the 52nd minute after picking up a knock.
Concerns initially arose about the potential severity of his injury, but speaking ahead of the weekend clash, Martin expressed confidence in Onuachu’s recovery.
“Paul is being assessed, so fingers crossed he’ll come through alright. It’s not a serious injury, which is great news for us—just a minor niggle. Hopefully, we can manage it, and he’ll be part of the squad,” Martin said.
However, the Saints have confirmed that Adam Lallana will be sidelined for a few weeks after limping off in the first half against Liverpool.
“Adam’s out, which is unfortunate because I know he would’ve loved to play at a place where he had a great time for four years. He’s likely to miss the next couple of games,” Martin added.
Onuachu’s performance against Liverpool caused problems for top defenders like Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk. Should he be fit for Saturday’s game, Southampton will be counting on a similar display against Brighton’s in-form defense.
