Plymouth Argyle forward Owen Oseni has shared his emotions after making history with the Super Eagles during the 2026 Unity Cup in London. The striker became the first Irish-born player to feature for Nigeria’s senior national team when he came off the bench in the Super Eagles’ 2-0 semifinal victory over Zimbabwe at The Valley on May 26.
The 23-year-old enjoyed a memorable week with the national team. His debut came as Nigeria booked a place in the final thanks to a brace from debutant Femi Azeez. Oseni was then included in the squad that went on to lift the Unity Cup after the Super Eagles defeated Jamaica 3-0 in the final, with a brace from Alhassan Yusuf, and a goal from Terem Moffi.

Born in Waterford, Oseni was eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland, Nigeria and Ivory Coast. However, he has committed his international future to Nigeria.
The striker replaced Philip Otele late in the semifinal against Zimbabwe, marking a significant milestone in his career and creating a unique piece of Super Eagles history.
Although he remained an unused substitute in the final against Jamaica, Oseni was part of the squad that successfully defended Nigeria’s Unity Cup crown. The forward has also been named in the travelling squad for upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
Following the tournament, Oseni took to Instagram to celebrate the achievement and thank those who supported him during a memorable week with the national team.
He wrote:
“To be the first Irish kid to play for the Super Eagles will be a moment me and my family will cherish forever. What a week with the brothers.”
For Oseni, the tournament delivered both a historic personal milestone and his first taste of silverware with the Super Eagles as Eric Chelle’s side continued preparations for future international assignments.
