Philip Otele continued his rise in Germany with a landmark moment, netting his first Bundesliga goal in Hamburger SV’s 3–2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.
The Nigerian winger, who recently earned his maiden invitation to the national team, made an immediate statement by opening the scoring early in the contest. Showing composure and precision, Otele beat goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to hand Hamburg the lead in the 19th minute and underline his growing influence since arriving on loan from Basel.

It was a performance that reflected his quick adaptation to life in the Bundesliga, with the 26-year-old increasingly becoming an attacking outlet for his side. His impact was further evident as Hamburg extended their advantage before the break, with Albert Sambi Lokonga firing home to make it 2–0.
Despite the eventual result, Otele’s contribution remained a standout moment in the game, particularly given the timing of his goal following his recent Super Eagles call-up for upcoming friendlies against Iran and Jordan.
Hamburg’s strong first-half display, however, was undone after the restart. Dortmund responded through Ramy Bensebaini, who converted from the penalty spot after a VAR decision reduced the deficit.
The momentum shifted further when Serhou Guirassy capitalised on a rebound to bring the hosts level, before Bensebaini struck again from another penalty late on to complete the comeback.
While the defeat denied Hamburg a positive result, the night ultimately belonged to Otele, whose first Bundesliga goal marks an important step in his career. With international recognition now following his club progress, the winger will be keen to build on this momentum both in Germany and with the Nigerian national team.
