Former Chelsea player Jason Cundy is relieved that the club did not sign Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen during the summer transfer window.
Chelsea pursued the Nigerian forward for much of the summer but failed to reach an agreement, with Osimhen ultimately moving to Galatasaray on loan for the season.
In addition to Osimhen, Chelsea had a deal in place for Samu Omorodion, but it fell apart at the last minute. The only striker to join the club was teenager Marc Guiu, acquired from Barcelona in an opportunistic move.
Despite the lack of an established number nine, Chelsea has not struggled to score goals and are currently the third-highest scorers in the league.
Nicolas Jackson, who has been in fine form, has shown that missing out on a striker may not have been a setback for the club. The 23-year-old has netted seven goals and provided three assists in 12 games, and former player Jamie O’Hara believes Jackson is becoming a top striker.
Cundy shared his thoughts on the summer transfer saga, admitting he is glad Osimhen did not sign for Chelsea, as it would have affected Jackson’s development.
“I’m glad we didn’t get Osimhen in the summer, because if we did, we wouldn’t be seeing the numbers Jackson is putting up,” Cundy told talkSPORT.
However, Cundy also believes Chelsea needs a backup option for Jackson, expressing concerns that Christopher Nkunku is not currently filling that role.
“But there is a case to be said. Do we need a backup? And Nkunku right now isn’t that backup? And that’s the problem we have as a squad,” he added.
