Two of Nigeria’s most influential footballers Victor Osimhen and Wilfred Ndidi will be on opposite sides when Galatasaray clash with Besiktas in the latest edition of the fiercely contested Istanbul derby on Saturday evening.
Osimhen will lead the line for Galatasaray, while midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is expected to anchor the midfield for Besiktas in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures in the Turkish Süper Lig calendar.
The encounter adds a unique angle for Nigerian supporters, as two key figures of the Nigeria national football team meet as rivals at club level.
Both players played important roles during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria secured a third-place finish. Ndidi captained the side during the tournament, while Osimhen contributed four goals in the campaign.
However, their usual partnership for the national team will be set aside when they take to the pitch at Besiktas’ Tüpraş Stadium.

Osimhen has been a decisive figure for Galatasaray this season. The Nigerian forward remains one of the most valuable players in the Turkish top flight and continues to deliver important goals for the league leaders.
The 27-year-old recently made a strong return from injury, scoring and assisting in Galatasaray’s 3–1 victory over Alanyaspor, underlining his influence in attack.
Galatasaray currently sit at the top of the league table with 58 points, holding a narrow advantage over their closest challengers, Fenerbahçe.
A win in the derby would strengthen their grip on the title race as they also prepare for a demanding UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash against Liverpool FC.
Standing in Galatasaray’s path is a revitalised Beşiktaş JK side marshalled by Ndidi.
Since arriving last summer, the former Leicester City FC midfielder has become a central figure in Besiktas’ midfield. His defensive awareness, tackling ability, and leadership have helped the club maintain an impressive run of results.

Besiktas head into the derby on an 18-match unbeaten streak in all competitions, including 13 consecutive league games without defeat, a run that has lifted them into fourth place with 46 points.
Ndidi also made headlines in the previous league match with a commanding performance, scoring in a 4–0 victory over Göztepe.
Saturday’s clash will not be the first time Osimhen and Ndidi have faced each other in club football. The duo previously met in European competition when SSC Napoli played Leicester City in the UEFA Europa League, a dramatic match that ended in a 2–2 draw.
They also squared off earlier this season when Galatasaray and Besiktas played out a 1–1 draw in the reverse fixture.

Beyond the individual Nigerian rivalry, the match carries major implications for the Süper Lig title race. Galatasaray are aiming to preserve their advantage at the summit, while Besiktas will see the derby as an opportunity to disrupt the leaders and strengthen their push for European qualification.
Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm Nigerian time, with the Istanbul derby expected to deliver another intense chapter in one of Turkey’s most passionate football rivalries.
