Victor Osimhen has matched Segun Odegbami’s tally of 23 international goals, becoming Nigeria’s joint second-highest goal scorer.
Osimhen achieved the feat with his 81st-minute header in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The Galatasaray forward’s goal not only secured Nigeria’s qualification for the tournament in Morocco as group leaders but also placed him alongside Odegbami in the record books.
The 25-year-old reached the 23-goal mark in 37 games, nine fewer than Odegbami, who achieved his tally in 46 appearances. Both players now trail only the late Rashidi Yekini, Nigeria’s all-time leading scorer, who netted 37 goals in 58 caps.
Yekini remains Nigeria’s most prolific scorer with a goal-per-game ratio of 0.63, slightly ahead of Osimhen’s 0.62.
The goal machine is already Africa’s highest goals scorer in the Italian Serie A, surpassing Liberian legend George Weah’s tally of 46 goals on his way to leading Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years in 2023.
Nigeria’s final qualifier against Rwanda in Uyo provides Osimhen with another opportunity to add to his tally and stand alone as the Super Eagles’ second-highest goal scorer.
