Nigeria has taken center stage in global athletics as both the fastest male and female 400m runners in the world are now Nigerians following sensational season-opening performances from Samuel Ogazi and Ella Onojuvwevwo.
Samuel Ogazi delivered a historic run at the Torrin Lawrence Memorial in Athens, blazing to a stunning world-leading 44.02 seconds in the men’s 400m.
The exceptional performance saw the University of Alabama star shatter Innocent Egbunike’s long-standing Nigerian national record of 44.17s, set a new University of Alabama school record, and move to No. 6 on the all-time NCAA Track and Field list.
In an astonishing race, Ogazi ultimately finished second by the slimmest of margins – just 0.005 seconds – despite producing one of the greatest 400m performances in collegiate and Nigerian history.

Ogazi’s explosive outing not only announced his arrival as a serious global force but also positioned him as the man to beat this season in one-lap racing.
On the women’s side, Ella Onojuvwevwo has equally stamped her authority on the global stage. The Nigerian sprint sensation currently leads the world rankings in the women’s 400m after clocking a personal best of 49.59 seconds in her season opener.
Her time is especially significant as it makes her the fastest Nigerian woman over the distance since Falilat Ogunkoya’s iconic 49.52s in 1998, reigniting hopes of Nigeria’s return to elite dominance in women’s quarter-mile competition.
The extraordinary feat marks a golden moment for Nigerian athletics, with both athletes opening their campaigns in record-breaking fashion and sending a powerful message ahead of the major global championships this season.
For the first time in recent memory, Nigeria sits atop the global 400m rankings in both the men’s and women’s categories – a remarkable testament to the country’s rising sprint power and a promising glimpse into its athletics future.
