Nigeria’s pursuit of a fourth Africa Cup of Nations crown continues today when they face Mozambique in the last 16, with the West African giants aiming to underline their pedigree against a side enjoying uncharted territory.
The tie, scheduled for the Stade de Fes by 8pm, marks Mozambique’s first-ever appearance in the knockout phase of the competition, a milestone moment for Os Mambas, but also a daunting test against one of Africa’s most decorated teams.
History offers clear encouragement for the Super Eagles. This will be only the second time the two nations meet at AFCON, the first coming in the final group game of the 2010 tournament when Nigeria ran out comfortable 3–0 winners. Peter Odemwingie struck twice either side of the interval before Obafemi Martins sealed the result late on.
More broadly, Nigeria have never lost to Mozambique in five previous meetings across all competitions, recording four wins and a draw. That dominance includes World Cup qualifying clashes in 2009, when a goalless draw in Maputo was followed by a dramatic 1–0 win in Nigeria, Victor Obinna scoring in stoppage time to send the Super Eagles to the 2010 World Cup.

Their most recent encounter came just over a year ago in a friendly in Portugal, a lively 3–2 Nigeria victory that underlined the attacking threat on both sides.
While past meetings favour Nigeria, knockout football brings its own pressures. For Mozambique, this is a chance to extend a historic run; for Nigeria, it is another step on a familiar path, and one they will be expected to take as their title challenge gathers momentum.
