The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is poised to appoint German coach Winfred Schafer as the new manager of the Super Eagles.
According to reports from The Guardian, the NFF has already reached an agreement with the German towards taking the Eagles job.
The Guardian said the agreement with Schafer was confirmed by an official of the NFF who spoke with the paper on condition of anonymity. The German is set to take over from Augustine Eguavoen, who has been serving in an interim capacity.
Schafer, whose managerial experience includes stints with Cameroon, Thailand, and Jamaica, is expected to arrive in Nigeria soon for an official introduction.
Schafer emerged as the top candidate for the Super Eagles position after initial talks with another German, Bruno Labbadia, fell through in late August.
Before the appointment of Labbadia, the NFF had also held talks with former Sweden coach Janne Anderson and two-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner Herve Renard.
Labbadia was however chosen and was meant to resume before last week’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda. He however pulled out of the job due to what the NFF described as inability of both parties to agree on payment of German tax.
This necessitated the NFF to appoint Eguavoen in interim capacity to superintend over both games. The ex-international secured a 3-0 home victory over Benin Republic in Uyo and a goalless draw away at Kigali.
