The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has refuted claims that they have approached Herve Renard for the vacant Super Eagles head coach position.
This denial comes in response to recent media reports suggesting that the French coach was being considered for the role.
A high-ranking NFF official, speaking to BBC Africa, categorically dismissed these rumors, stating, “This report is inaccurate. We’ve not contacted Renard or his reps.”
The Super Eagles’ head coach position became vacant following the resignation of Finidi George, who stepped down after just two games in charge.
George’s brief tenure came after the departure of Jose Peseiro, who left the role after his contract expired at the end of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year in Ivory where he led them to a second-place finish behind the hosts.
Finidi who was one of Peseiro’s assistants failed to win any of his games in charge, playing a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo and losing 2-1 to Benin Republic in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Both games were 2026 World Cup qualifiers with the Eagles wallowing in fifth places with three points from three draws and one loss in the four games played.
Since Finidi’s resignation, speculation has been rife about potential candidates to take over the helm of Nigeria’s national team with the NFF already confirming they will engage a foreign technical adviser.
Herve Renard, known for his success with several African national teams, including leading Zambia and Ivory Coast to Africa Cup of Nations victories, had been mentioned in some quarters as a potential candidate.
The 55-year-old coach is currently in charge of the French women’s national team and is expected to leave them after the Paris 2024 Olympics in August.
