Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has emerged as a potential January transfer option for Manchester United, with the Nigerian midfielder being offered to the Premier League side as they explore ways to strengthen their squad, Bold Sports reports.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed the development while speaking on his official YouTube channel, confirming that Ndidi is open to a return to the Premier League and that Manchester United are aware of the opportunity. However, Fabrizio stressed that no formal bid or proposal has been submitted at this stage.

Ndidi only joined Turkish giants Besiktas last summer from Leicester City. He has since featured in 16 matches for the club, scoring once. His influence at Besiktas has grown rapidly, with the 29-year-old named vice-captain in October before assuming a major leadership role on the international stage two months later, when he was appointed Super Eagles captain following William Troost-Ekong’s retirement from international football.

Manchester United’s interest comes amid a clear need to reinforce their midfield as the club looks to finish the season strongly. The Red Devils currently sit fifth in the Premier League with 35 points and remain determined to secure a Champions League qualification spot after a campaign marked by inconsistency.

The situation in United’s midfield has been complicated by impending and ongoing changes. Casemiro, the club’s primary defensive midfielder, has announced his decision to leave at the end of the season, while Manuel Ugarte has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.

Highly-rated youngster Kobbie Mainoo also endured limited opportunities under former manager Ruben Amorim but returned to the starting lineup under interim head coach Michael Carrick, impressing in a 2–0 victory over Manchester City in Carrick’s first match in charge.

Although Manchester United have been linked with several long-term midfield targets such as Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton, those options are considered financially difficult, particularly in the January transfer window. As a result, a short-term or stop-gap signing like Ndidi could offer a practical solution, allowing the club to remain competitive while planning for bigger investments in the future.

For any deal to materialise, Besiktas are expected to demand a fee exceeding the €8 million they paid for Ndidi last summer. While no official move has yet been made, the coming days will determine whether Manchester United decide to act on the opportunity and bring the experienced Nigerian back to the Premier League.
