Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has been appointed vice-captain of Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas, the club announced in an official statement released on Friday.

Ndidi, who joined Besiktas in the summer from Leicester City, has enjoyed an impressive start to life in Turkey, featuring in five league matches and two Conference League qualification fixtures. His performances in midfield have already made him one of the team’s standout players this season.

In the same announcement, Besiktas confirmed that Orkun Kökçü, who joined on loan from Benfica but will complete a permanent move at the end of the season, has been appointed as the team’s new captain.

The club explained the reasoning behind the new appointments in the official statement:

“With the decision of our President Serdal Adalı and our Board of Directors, a change has been made regarding the captaincy of our Football A Team.”

“With the decision of our Board of Directors and the opinion of our technical team that our players who play more effective positions on the field should be appointed as captains, Orkun Kökçü has been appointed as the first captain of our Football A Team, and Wilfred Ndidi as the second captain.”

“We would like to thank Necip Uysal and Mert Günok for their efforts during their captaincy periods and wish our new captains Orkun Kökçü and Wilfred Ndidi success in their captaincy duties.”

Both Kökçü and Ndidi will officially begin their duties on the pitch when Besiktas face Gençlerbirliği in their next Super Lig match on Saturday.
