Michael Emenalo is leaving his role as chief football executive of the Saudi Pro League (SPL), bringing an end to a three-year spell during which he played a key role in the league’s rapid transformation and global rise.
The former Nigeria international and ex-Chelsea technical director will also leave his position as head of the league’s Player Acquisition Center of Excellence (PACE) at the expiration of his contract.
Emenalo, who joined the SPL in 2023, was instrumental in attracting several high-profile players to Saudi Arabia while helping shape the league’s recruitment strategy. Beyond signing established stars, he also pushed for a younger player profile as part of the competition’s long-term development plans.

A statement from the SPL on Tuesday read: “The SPL extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to Emenalo for his efforts during his time with the league, and wishes him continued success in his future endeavours.“
Reflecting on his time in Saudi Arabia, Emenalo said he was proud of the foundation laid during his tenure, describing the project as one driven by “audacious ambition,” in an exclusive interview with TheAthleticFC.
He added that while there is still work to be done in developing football in Saudi Arabia, he believes the league is now well positioned for sustained growth and future success.
Emenalo also expressed gratitude to league officials, club presidents, sporting directors and members of the football development department, praising their commitment and collaboration throughout his time in the role.

The 60-year-old is understood to be keen on returning closer to his family, with interest already emerging from clubs in Europe.
Emenalo remains one of Nigeria’s most respected football administrators, having previously enjoyed a successful executive career at Chelsea before taking on the challenge of helping build the Saudi Pro League into one of the world’s fastest-growing football competitions.
