Ipswich Town are on the verge of completing the signing of Ajax striker Chuba Akpom, with Birmingham City officially pulling out of the race after the player made his intentions clear, Bold Sports reports.
According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, Akpom informed both Ajax and Birmingham City that he preferred a move to Portman Road, prompting the Blues to end their pursuit of the 29-year-old Nigerian forward. Ipswich are now working to finalise the details of the deal.
The Championship side had previously agreed a loan move with Ajax, which includes a £7 million obligation to buy if they secure promotion to the Premier League. Akpom has already completed his medical with Ipswich, with final paperworks now the last step before the move is confirmed.

Birmingham had attempted to sway the deal by offering Ajax a permanent transfer worth £6 million — an option the Dutch club preferred due to the guaranteed fee. However, Akpom’s preference ultimately proved decisive.
The striker spent the second half of last season on loan at Lille from Ajax, scoring three goals in 16 appearances. He joined the Dutch club in 2023 following a prolific spell at Middlesbrough.
After a dramatic tug-of-war between the two Championship clubs, Ipswich now look set to land their man ahead of Friday night’s season opener — against Birmingham City.
