Former Nigerian basketball star Ime Udoka has led the Houston Rockets to impressive heights, securing their spot in the quarterfinals of the NBA Emirates Cup.
The Rockets clinched their advancement by overcoming the Minnesota Timberwolves in a thrilling overtime battle, 117-111, at the Target Center.
With a flawless 3-0 record, the Rockets topped West Group A, showcasing their dominance in the tournament. Key to their success were the standout performances of center Alperen Sengun and guard Fred VanVleet.
Sengun recorded a triple-double, tallying 22 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds, while VanVleet nearly achieved a triple-double with 27 points, 11 assists, and 8 rebounds.
Despite Anthony Edwards’ game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds, the Timberwolves couldn’t halt the Rockets’ momentum. This victory marked the Rockets’ first loss of the NBA Cup season.
The Rockets’ strong form extends beyond the tournament, as they currently sit fourth in the Western Conference with a 13-6 record. Their ultimate goal is to qualify for the playoffs at the end of the season, a feat they haven’t achieved since 2020. Udoka and the Rockets will rely on the health of their star players to fulfill this ambition.
