The football community in Nigeria and Italy is in mourning after Emmanuel King Okoye died following a collision during a match on April 29, 2026. The 25-year-old midfielder sustained a serious head injury before collapsing on the pitch while visiting Nigeria.

‎Okoye had remained active in football across amateur circuits in recent years. He featured for multiple Italian lower-division sides, including spells with Acri and Palmese, and continued to play competitive matches regularly. His presence across several teams reflected his commitment and steady involvement in the game.

‎Reports from Notiziario del Calcio and local authorities confirm that the midfielder suffered the injury after a heavy on-field collision. Medical responders arrived quickly and administered first aid before transporting him to hospital.

‎Despite those efforts, Okoye was later pronounced dead. The incident brought the match to an immediate halt, as players and officials reacted in shock to the sudden turn of events.

‎The midfielder built much of his playing journey in Italy, representing several amateur clubs over the years. His career included time with Acri, Palmese, Trebisacce, Tricarico Pozzo di Sicar, Campora, San Fili, and Promosport.

‎His contributions at grassroots level earned him recognition among teammates and local supporters, particularly during the 2018–2019 season when he featured prominently.

‎In a statement, Canicattini Calcio honored their former player:

‎”The Pol.D. City of Canicattini is mourning. Yesterday, April 29, while playing a match in Nigeria – in what was supposed to be a time of peace and family reunion – former Canary striker Emmanuel King Okoye tragically lost his life at the age of just 25.

‎”A former player of Acri and Palmese, Emmanuel wore the Giallorossi jersey in the 2018-2019 season. He distinguished himself with his commitment, integrity, and passion for football.

‎”Now all that remains are memories, from the superlative goal he scored in Mazzarrone to the filial bond that bound him to Massimo Ficara another angel—just like him—who passed who passed away too soon.

‎”The president, the management, the coaching staff, and all the Canarian athletes join the Okoye family in condoling. Farewell, Emmanuel.”

‎Okoye’s passing follows another recent incident involving Michael Eneramo, who also collapsed during a local game in Kaduna.

‎These events have renewed concerns around medical readiness and player safety, particularly within grassroots football environments where emergency support systems can be limited.
