Edo Queens are set to earn about N251 million ($150,000) for their debut appearance in the CAF Women’s Champions League Morocco 2024.
This was revealed in a statement published on the website of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Thursday.
According to the continental football body, the guaranteed sum is part of an increased prize pool, reflecting CAF’s commitment to the growth of women’s football across Africa.
Under the leadership of Dr. Patrice Motsepe, CAF introduced the Women’s Champions League in 2021, and since then, the competition has steadily grown in prestige and financial reward. This year’s total prize fund stands at $2.35 million, a 52% increase from previous editions.
The stakes are high, with the winner walking away with $600,000 (N1.005 billion), while the runner-up will earn $400,000 (N670 million). Teams finishing third and fourth in the group stage will receive $200,000 (N335 million) and $150,000, respectively.
Edo Queens, drawn in Group B alongside defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Tutankhamun of Egypt, and Ethiopia’s CBE FC, will hope to surpass expectations and advance to the knockout rounds, where the rewards are even greater.
According to the statement, CAF’s investment in women’s football also includes a focus on youth development, with plans to establish academies for boys and girls across the continent.
Motsepe said this initiative aims to nurture the next generation of football talent while ensuring that African competitions remain attractive and competitive on a global scale.
