Edo Queens will be looking to secure a medal at the CAF Women’s Champions League when they face Egypt’s FC Masar in the Third Place match later today at Stade El Abdi, kicking off at 6 pm Nigerian time.
The Queens endured a heart-wrenching 3-1 defeat in extra time to Congo’s TP Mazembe Women, while FC Masar also suffered a dramatic loss to Morocco’s FAR Rabat, conceding a 90+9 winner.
In the group stage, the two teams played to a goalless draw, but today’s match will require a definitive result. FC Masar hopes to become the first Egyptian club to finish third, while Edo Queens will be looking to replicate Bayelsa Queens’ 2022 achievement.
Beyond the honour, both teams will compete for the coveted $350,000 third-place prize, which is $50,000 more than the fourth-place reward. This prize money will not only boost the clubs financially but also help improve their facilities, enabling better training conditions that can enhance player performance.
The winner of the competition will take home $600,000, a 52% increase from the previous edition’s prize.
Although Edo Queens were unable to secure the trophy in Casablanca, Morocco, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has promised to host the team in recognition of their impressive run in the Champions League, as well as their victory in the WAFU B championship.
