Championship leaders Coventry City have emerged as front-runners in the race to sign Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka, with further developments expected within the next 24 hours, Bold Sports reports.
According to BBC Sport football journalist Nizaar Kinsella, Coventry are intensifying their pursuit of the Brentford man ahead of a potential move before the end of the January transfer window.
Onyeka has endured an inconsistent campaign at Brentford this season, struggling to secure regular playing time under head coach Keith Andrews. The 28-year-old has featured in just nine matches across all competitions and is yet to make a Premier League start.

With his future uncertain, Brentford are reportedly open to either selling or loaning out the Nigerian international, as the club consider its options regarding his long-term place in the squad. Keith Andrews has also acknowledged Onyeka’s desire for more minutes, admitting he understands the midfielder’s need for consistent game time.
Coventry’s interest, however, is not without competition. Another Championship side, Sheffield United, currently 17th in the league, are also pushing to sign Onyeka as they look to strengthen their midfield options.
Despite the rival interest, Coventry may hold the advantage. The Sky Blues sit top of the Championship table with a three-point lead, placing them in a strong position to return to the Premier League next season. That prospect, combined with the opportunity to work under legendary midfielder Frank Lampard, who is currently in charge at Coventry, could prove decisive in Onyeka’s decision-making.

Coventry’s form has dipped in recent weeks, with the club winning just two of their last seven matches across all competitions. As they look to regain momentum and maintain their promotion push, the arrival of Onyeka could provide a timely morale boost and help push them over the line in achieving their ambitions.
