Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers had high praise for Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman following their goalless draw in the UEFA Champions League group stage on Wednesday.
Rodgers, who previously coached Lookman during their time together at Leicester City, shared fond memories of the Nigerian international and jokingly reminded him to stay focused on the match despite his Ballon d’Or nomination.
“I joked with him and said: ‘I know you’re a candidate for the Ballon d’Or, but forget about the Ballon d’Or tonight!’,” Rodgers while speaking to Sky Sports said after the game. “Lookman is an extraordinary guy. I had the pleasure of coaching him at Leicester City, and he was a fantastic player for me. He scored important goals.”
Rodgers went on to express his admiration for Lookman’s career progression, particularly at Atalanta, where the forward has become a key player since joining the Serie A side.
“I would have liked to have him back at my club, but in the end, he went to Atalanta, where he became an icon. It’s fantastic to see him play at this level. He’s an exceptional guy, very professional, and a great athlete,” Rodgers added. “And I’m happy he didn’t score tonight!”
Lookman played under Rodgers at Leicester City while on loan from RB Leipzig before moving on loan to Atalanta in the 2022 summer transfer window.
