FC Augsburg has secured the services of Nigerian international Frank Onyeka on a season-long loan from Premier League club Brentford.
The Bundesliga side announced the deal on their official website on Friday evening, with Brentford also confirming the move.
The move reunites Onyeka with Augsburg’s head coach Jess Thorup, under whom he previously played at Danish club FC Midtjylland. During his time in Denmark from 2017 to 2021, Onyeka made 123 appearances and won two Danish Superliga titles.
Expressing his excitement about the move, Onyeka said, “With the loan to FC Augsburg, I hope to get a lot of playing time and am looking forward to being able to play an active role in the team straight away. I hope for a successful season and look forward to working with Jess Thorup again. I can’t wait to get to know the fans and the rest of the team.”
Augsburg’s sporting director Marinko Jurendic praised the acquisition, saying, “With his international experience, athletic ability and robustness, he brings a strong presence to the pitch. We are now well positioned in midfield for the current season as we have different types of players in our team. We are very happy that Frank has decided to join us.”
Onyeka joined Brentford in July 2021 as the club’s first signing of the Premier League era. During his time with the Bees, he made 78 appearances across all competitions, including 69 in the Premier League. He scored his first goal for Brentford against Sheffield United in April 2024.
Brentford’s head coach Thomas Frank commented on the loan move, saying, “Frank has been an important player during our last three seasons in the Premier League. He has been a big part of our success, and I can’t praise him enough for that in every aspect.
“Frank wants to play week in, week out as a starter; this is a good opportunity for him to do that. We have a lot of young midfielders who also need minutes, so this is a good loan for Frank and the club.”
The 26-year-old midfielder has also represented Nigeria 25 times at the international level and recently finished as a runner-up in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
Before joining Augsburg, Onyeka will fulfill his international duties for Nigeria in their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda on September 7th and 10th, respectively.
