Benjamin Fredrick has returned to preseason training with Brentford as the Nigerian defender steps up his comeback from the knee injury that cut short his promising 2024/25 campaign.

The 21-year-old was among the first group of players to report for preseason as the Premier League club began preparations for the 2025/26 season, with Fredrick hoping to convince head coach Keith Andrews that he is ready for a bigger role.

Fredrick spent the first half of last season on loan at Belgian Pro League side Dender, where he quickly established himself as a key figure in defence. He made 15 appearances in all competitions before suffering a serious knee injury that ended his season prematurely.

The setback also denied the Super Eagles defender the opportunity to feature at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, forcing him to return to Brentford to continue his rehabilitation as he worked towards full fitness.

Before the injury, Fredrick had become an important player for both club and country. He started four consecutive FIFA World Cup qualifying matches for Nigeria and completed two demanding 120-minute outings during the CAF playoff ties against Gabon and DR Congo, underlining his growing influence in the national team.

The former Simoiben Academy defender moved to Brentford from Kaduna and made an immediate impression during his first season in England. His consistent displays for the club’s development side earned him the Brentford Under-21 Player’s Player of the Season award, highlighting his rapid progress.

With preseason now underway, Fredrick faces an important period in his development. While Brentford are yet to decide whether he will remain with the first team or head out on another loan spell, the defender will be eager to rediscover the form that made him one of Dender’s standout performers before his injury.

Brentford finished ninth in the Premier League last season with 53 points, narrowly missing out on European qualification. The Bees also reached the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup before bowing out to eventual champions Manchester City. They will now be targeting further progress as they prepare for the new campaign.
