Concerns over Semi Ajayi’s fitness were eased as the defender returned to action and made an immediate impact in Hull City’s 1-1 draw with Oxford United on Good Friday.‎‎

Ajayi had suffered an injury during Nigeria’s international friendly against Iran last week, raising doubts over his availability. The former Arsenal youth captain subsequently withdrew from the squad ahead of their fixture against Jordan in Antalya, citing fitness concerns. However, his inclusion in Hull’s matchday squad — after training in the build-up — suggested the issue was not as serious as initially feared.‎‎

Meanwhile, Nigeria coach Eric Chelle handed a debut to Emmanuel Fernandez in Ajayi’s absence, with the Rangers centre-back marking the occasion by scoring his first international goal.‎‎

Back at the Kassam Stadium, Hull made a bright start and took the lead inside four minutes, with Ajayi playing a key role. His long, measured pass was expertly controlled on the chest by Mohamed Belloumi, who drove past his marker before firing a left-footed effort beyond goalkeeper Jamie Cumming via a slight deflection.‎‎

Oxford responded swiftly, drawing level nine minutes later when Cameron Brannagan converted from the penalty spot after a foul by Charlie Hughes on Will Lankshear.

‎‎Despite opportunities for both sides, neither could find a winner. Oxford, battling relegation concerns, showed resilience, while Hull controlled spells without converting their possession into goals.‎‎

Ajayi’s assist underlined his importance at both ends of the pitch. Playing the full match, he combined defensive solidity with progressive distribution, offering Hull a reliable outlet in transition.

‎‎The result leaves both sides with a point, while Hull will take encouragement from Ajayi’s return to fitness and immediate contribution.‎
